Knowing more about India
This is an exhibition about India. Bringing together artists that represent the voices of the "new" India in the globalised world, "Singular Identitys'' is about fresh faces, innovative traditions and the spirit of the country.
Curated by Alka Pande, the exhibition seeks to re-look at identities in an increasingly commercialised world. With the globe shrinking rapidly, identities are no longer always simple and often move beyond just cities and countries to embrace different aspects of diverse cultures. And to express the dilemma about different identities blending into one is "Singular Indentitys".
"Art today becomes an exciting statement of the cultural diversity mapping diverse geographies. Homogeneity, which emerges as a by-product of globalisation, leads to the growing importance of nudging the cultural producer to look for the celebration of the difference,'' says Pande.
And like the theme of the exhibition which is about complex realities and imaginary homelands, the `diversity' is reflected in the forms of art too. With different expressions, from installations to digital prints to sculptures and paintings, the exhibition has space for almost every kind of form from canvas to ceramic. The artists are also an eclectic bunch from Diwan Manna, a photographer who has turned the lens towards himself, to Ranjani Shettar, an artist who explores the three-dimensional form by using materials from everyday life.
The exhibition has works by Joe Demetro, Kristine Micheal, Birendra Pani, Praneet Soi, Jagannath Panda, Avantika Bawa, Joydip Sengupta, Hema Upadhyaya and Nivedita Deshpande.
Opening this Thursday (December 9) at Visual Arts Gallery of India Habitat Centre, the show will end on December 14.
